Thixomolding is a new technology of magnesium alloy die-casting which appeared in 1990s. It combines die-casting and injection process into one, and the process is similar to injection molding. Firstly, the magnesium alloy ingot is machined and cut into fine particles. The magnesium alloy particles are loaded into the hopper and forced to be transported to the grain barrel. The rotating screw in the barrel drives the magnesium alloy particles to move towards the mold direction. When they reach the heating part of the barrel, the alloy particles are in partial melting state, The semi-solid alloy with thixotropic structure is formed from the alloy with dendrite structure under the "shear action" of spirochete. The semi-solid alloy can flow like "thermoplastic" under the action of external force. When it accumulates to a certain volume, it is injected into the cavity of the vacuum preheating die at high speed (5.5m / s). The alloy was heated to 582 ± 2 ℃ and protected by argon when the solid volume fraction was as high as 60%.

Compared with the traditional cold and hot die casting, thixotropic injection molding does not need liquid metal melting and pouring process. The production process is cleaner, safer and energy-saving. There is no molten liquid generated. The consumption of raw materials per unit forming part is greatly reduced. There is no explosion risk. SF6 gas protection is not required. The destruction of ozone layer by SF6 is eliminated. The amount of gas in the forming process is greatly reduced The porosity is less than 0.069%, so the forming parts can be heat treated. The formed parts have the advantages of fine grain, high density, good mechanical properties and strong corrosion resistance.
